Warlock PvP Strengths

If you’ve ever faced one, you know that Warlocks can be a nightmare to go against in Player versus Player. Your character’s greatest strength is the way they can DoT and crowd control. In plain English, your character’s strength is the way they can cast spells that do damage over time on an opponent, then cause the victim to run around out of control as they die.

Another strength of your Warlock when going against magic users is the Felhunter. Trained specifically to fight spell casters, these fierce beasts will ruin an opposing caster’s day for sure.

Warlock PvP Weaknesses

Fortunately for your opponents, your character does also have weaknesses in Player versus Player combat. Mages (and others) can break your Fear spells and counter your DoT spells. Against these pests, you’ll want to deploy your Felhunter. But you’ll also need some direct damage types of spells. You’ll burn up lots of mana fighting these guys, so mana-replenishing spells like Life Tap will be crucial to keep your from running out. Running out of mana in Player versus Player combat is a fatal mistake.

Two of them are Honor Points and PvP Tokens. These special PvP rewards work almost as an alternate form of gold, one that you can use only in certain shops but that lets you buy more powerful equipment than you could otherwise get your hands on. Learning about these will definitely pay off, as getting them is one way to speed your character’s advancement through the levels.

Getting Honor Points

When you kill characters from the opposing faction, you will earn Honor Points. More correctly, you will earn honor as long as the character you killed was no more than 8 levels lower than your character. Killing characters that are so much lower than you not only doesn’t give you honor, it is generally considered bad sportsmanship. This means that if you want to increase your honor you need to pick on characters your own size, or at least ones that are within shouting distance of your level.

Once you accumulate enough Honor Points you will be able to use them, along with Battleground Marks of Honor (earned, not surprisingly, for your actions in the battlegrounds), to buy stuff in Stormwind City’s Champions’ Hall or the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar. The available items range from consumables, to gems and trinkets, even high-end armor and weapons.

Another way to earn Honor Points is to turn in one Mark of Honor from each battleground as part of the Horde’s For Great Honor quest or the Alliance’s Concerted Efforts quest. These quests are repeatable too, so you can grind out honor this way if you like.

Getting PvP Tokens

Certain areas of the Outland give you PvP Tokens (the Mark of Honor Hold or Halaa Battle Token for example) as rewards for killing enemy characters. Tokens are a lot like the Marks of Honor you get when you fight in the battlegrounds, except that only PvP vendors in the region the token comes from will honor them. So if your character had Marks of Honor Hold, for example, Honor Hold PvP vendors would accept them but Halaa PvP Vendors would not. PvP Tokens are most valuable to you when you are below Level 70, since the gear you can buy with them doesn’t go up past this level.

Now you know about how Honor Points and PvP Tokens can help your character get better gear. And you have some good ideas about where to go to earn them. Or maybe you were luckier and happened to notice that the PvP icon was set on your character’s portrait for no reason that you knew of? Knowing how your character gets into PvP mode can spell the difference between life and death for your character. Let’s get right to it and see how you can end up in PvP mode.

The ways you can get into PvP mode depend on the kind of server you’re playing on. If your server is a Normal realm, the rules are different than there are for a PvP realm. Let’s start with a Normal realm.

In a Normal Realm

When playing in a Normal realm, your character will end up in PvP mode if:

• Your character attacks a player character (PC) of the opposite faction and that PC is already in PvP mode.
• You use a beneficial spell or ability on (you help) a PC from your faction who happens to be in PvP mode.
• You attack a Non-Player Character (NPC) guard or civilian from the opposing faction.
• You enter an enemy capital city.
• You enter any one of the battlegrounds.
• You enter one of the free-for-all PvP areas (Gurubashi Arena, for example) where you can attack anyone, even if they’re from your own faction.
• You put your character into PvP mode intentionally by typing /pvp. Even if you immediately type /pvp again to exit PvP mode, your character will remain in PvP mode for 5 minutes (see the following explanation).

Regardless of how your character ended up in PvP mode, they will remain in that mode until 5 minutes after their last action that could put them into PvP mode. So if your character went into Gurubashi Arena, the PvP flag would remain on the entire time your character is in there, until 5 minutes after they left the arena (unless they did something else to trigger PvP mode).

In a PvP Realm

If your character is in a PvP realm, all the conditions we just talked about apply. Beyond that, there are two more conditions that will raise your character’s PvP flag:

• Entering a Contested zone.
• Entering an Enemy zone.

Basically in a PvP realm, going anywhere other than Friendly territory or a Sanctuary zone will put your character into PvP mode. After all, this is a PvP realm we’re talking about. So think back, my friend, to that time you discovered that your character was in PvP mode. simply by taking a look at the lists above, you can probably figure out which of the conditions you accidentally triggered to set the flag. Now what you need to do if figure out how to best defend yourself in PvP mode, whether you get there accidentally or on purpose.

Fighting Duels

Duels are one-on-one battles between players. You don’t have to be on a PvP server to duel, but you can’t duel within cities. One of the best places to find someone to duel against is the entrance to any major city, which is where duelists often hang out looking for someone to challenge.

The Battlegrounds

Horde and Alliance go at it in the battlegrounds, competing to win battles and earn marks. Marks serve as a sort of money that you can trade for various items, including better PvP gear. You can only use marks at the special PvP vendor shops.

Arenas

Arena combat is an organized, ongoing tournament. Teams (2v2, 3v3, 5v5) battle to earn Arena Points. Points are awarded by team, so fighting as part of a team rather than earning individual glory is the goal. When in the Arena, you can encounter teams from your own faction as well as teams from the enemy faction.

Random Combat

Any time you encounter a player from the other faction who has their PvP flag on, you can do battle with them. In PvP realms, that flag is always set, except in a few protected areas, you’re always open to attack. You can manually turn your PvP flag on and off by typing /pvp. Regardless of what you do, various situations and locations will turn your PvP flag on automatically, even if you aren’t playing in a PvP realm.

World PvP

If you visit the Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus, Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest, or Nagrand, you will find goals that require PvP combat. If you want to achieve those goals, you had better be ready to fight.

PvP Zones

Wintergrasp is the first of a new type of zone that is totally dedicated to PvP combat. This zone seems to be real popular, so expect more like it in the future.

Here, we’ll talk about three things that fit this description: the local defense channel, the resurrection timer, and the diminishing returns of crowd control and movement impairing spells.

The Local Defense Channel

The local defense channel is a zone-wide message that goes out whenever an NPC in the zone is attacked. Normally these messages are disabled, so you don’t see them. But if you’re interested in PvP combat, you’ll want to see them and they’re easy to turn on and off. To see messages for this zone, type /join LocalDefense. To disable the messages, type /leave LocalDefense.

The world channel is similar to the zone channels, except that a message goes out whenever an NPC in any zone is attacked. To turn the world messages on and off, use /join WorldDefense and /leave WorldDefense.

The Resurrection Timer

When your character dies, the resurrection timer controls how long you have to wait before the character resurrects. The first time you die in PvP, either against another player or fighting a PvP-flagged NPC, your character can resurrect without a time penalty. For each death after that, you get a time penalty, adding an additional delay before your character can resurrect. These delays can keep adding up to a maximum of 5 minutes.

Be aware that the delay doesn’t affect your character if another player resurrects them or you make use of special items like the Goblin Jumper Cables to resurrect more quickly.

The Diminishing Returns of Crowd Control & Movement Impairing Spells

Crowd control spells like Charm and Stun can be brutal in PvP. Fortunately, they have some additional limitations in PvP situations. If your character gets hit by one of these spells, then hit again with the same spell within 15 seconds of the previous spell wearing off, the length of time the second spell affects your character is reduced by 50%. If they get hit yet again, the duration of the third spell is reduced by 75%. Have your character get affected by the same spell one more time, and this fourth casting will have no effect. Under no circumstances will any of the crowd control spells last longer than 12 seconds, regardless of their normal duration. Movement impairing spells like Entangling Roots and Frost Nova are subject to the same limitations.
